Don was born in Cleveland , Oklahoma on October 6, 1932 . He attended Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio and graduated from Pecos High School in Pecos , Texas . After graduation he served in the military as a drill sergeant. Don attended Texas A & M where he majored in finance. In 1955 Barbara Sue Stewart became his bride and the couple moved to Ft. Stockton , Texas where Don became co-owner of Ft. Stockton Pipe & Supply Co. The Cox family moved to New Iberia in 1960 to open Iberia Rental Service. Iberia Rental Service has been in operation for fifty-two years and a vital active part of this community. In 2004 the old New Iberia Hardware building became available on Admiral Doyle and Don and his son, Kyle, expanded to open their Parties Plus Bridals store. Mr. Cox, a life-long member of The First United Methodist Church, was active in several community organizations including the Jaycees, the Rotary Club, the Boy Scouts and the Lost Diners Club. In recent years, Don pursued the hobby of breeding thoroughbred horses at his Four Oaks Horse Farm on Hazard Road in New Iberia . This adventure enabled him to cross paths with many people in that industry both in New Iberia and Kentucky . You can say Don accomplished his 'bucket list' when he received his instrument rating which helped him to fly his own plane. He also engaged in hunting and fishing trips and fondly remembered camp outs; time spent with old friends in the great outdoors. Those times were his treasured 'Kodak Moments'. As an avid dog lover and supporter of the Iberia Humane Society, Don never went anywhere without his dogs, Trixie and KeeWee. In Dons later years contentment meant sitting in his easy-chair watching Gunsmoke and holding one dog in his lap with the other wrapped around his neck. Morning rounds included KeeWee having his usual cup of coffee at Iberia Bank. Don was the son of the late Helen Bridwell Cox and Edgar Henry Cox. He is survived by a brother Robert Allen 'Bob' Cox of New Iberia and a cousin Shirley Johnson of Evergreen, Colorado . He leaves behind his wife Sue Cox, daughter Donna Sue Cox Whatley and her husband Bill Ray Whatley, son Kyle Stewart Cox, granddaughter Kristin Blair Landrum, grandsons Christopher Neal Whatley, Kannon Stewart Grayson Cox and Joseph Kougar Cox and a great-granddaughter Kayla Beesaw. The family requests all memorial gifts go to The Don Cox Memorial Fund at the First United Methodist Church in New Iberia for the purpose of aiding single and abused women and children in the community. Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd. , New Iberia , LA , 70560 , 337-365-3331, will be handling the arrangements.
