St. Martinville - Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Union Baptist Church for Elvina 'Mother' Alexander Brown, age 86. Rev. Joel Greene, Sr., Pastor, will conduct the funeral service. Interment will follow at Union Baptist Cemetery in St. Martinville. Elvina 'Mother' Alexander Brown was born January 8, 1926 in St. Martinville, Louisiana to Ignace and Elvina Williams Alexander. On December 22, 1949 Elvina was united in marriage to Lionel 'Mickey' Brown. To this union three children were born: Faith B. James (Lloyd), Lionel 'L.J.' Brown, Jr., and Vickie L. Bradford. She quietly departed this home on January 9, 2012 at Lafayette General Hospital. She was an active member of Union Baptist Church in St. Martinville. She served as a Deaconess and also in many other capacities at the church such as a cook, a communion preparer and a member of the Mission. She also held various offices throughout the years. She has been designated as the mother of the church. Serving others meant she was serving her God which was always her ultimate goal in life. Although she worked different jobs, her main occupation was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her children called her mother and as the grandchildren and great-grandchildren got older they along with many family and friends also began to call her mother. She was truly 'Mother' to all who knew and loved her. She was a great popcorn ball maker which many people enjoyed. She loved cooking and enjoyed seeing family eat. She has left her family with a wealth of memories, wisdom and compassion for others. Elvina was a charter member of the New Comers Social Club and was active in the many activities that they participated in. She was an active participant in the establishment of the Mardi Gras Parade and many activities that they participated in. She is survived by her three children, Faith James (Lloyd) of St. Martinville, Lionel 'L.J.' Brown of Lafayette and Vickie L. Bradford of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Elyria Mitchell of Port Arthur, TX, Phyllis Robertson and Beverly (L.J.) Malveaux of St. Martinville, LA; seven grandchildren, Lamont Wiltz (Darnel), Tammara Savoy, Megan James, Chelsea Brown, Rolden Brown and Terryeon Bradford; six great-grandchildren Amore Davis, LaCoby James, IyanniDavis, LaTrevon Wiltz, Joerian Gilliam, Lavon Wiltz and Cadence Brown as well as a hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel 'Mickey' Brown, her parents, Ignace and Elvina Alexander, and Step-Mother, Hilda Charles Alexander, seven brothersArchilles, Herbert, Charles, Marshall and Woodrow Alexander and Matthew Vidrine; seven sisters, Mary Vida Landry, Ethel Willis, Pecola, Ruby, Eunice and Julene Alexander and Hilda W. Woolery and a niece whom she raised Annabelle Thompson. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Ramon Robertson, Eric Reynolds, Nolan Sam, Jr., Frances Barras, Charles Alexander, Jr., and Jermaine James. Honorary pallbearers will be Lamont Wiltz, Lloyd James, Terryeon Bradford, Rolden Brown, Kenired Alexander, and L. J. Malveaux. Pellerin Funeral Home of St. Martinville is in charge of arrangements.
