Gussie Flegeance

St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Notre Dame Catholic Church, in St. Martinville for Gussie Lillie Filer Flegeance, who passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at the beautiful and youthful age of of 101. Fr. Augustinus Seran, SVD, will officiate at the funeral Mass. Scriptures will be read by Mia Johnson and Devora Orph. Gifts will be presented to the Altar by Adaire Castille and Tyrese Rideaux. Entombment will follow at St. Michael Mausoleum. Gussie was born on March 8, 1910 , having lived her life to the fullest and loving her family unconditionally. She loved and treasured every moment she had while taking care of her grandchildren, always wanting to guide and prepare them for what lied ahead in their lives. An especially wonderful cook, she enjoyed preparing meals for family gatherings and special occasions. Gussie always made time in her busy day to sit down and watch her favorite television shows: her soap operas, 'The Price is Right,' and 'Wheel of Fortune.' Gussie would often reminisce of the years of trials and tribulations of growing up in the early 1900's to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, telling them how easy their life is now as compared to when she was growing up. She reminded them of how fortunate they are now and how they should appreciate the material things they have been given in life, as well as getting a good quality education and making use of it. Her inspiring words of wisdom, in which she lovingly shared with her family and dearest friends, will forever be treasured and remembered. Survivors include two daughters, Velma 'Gin' Johnson and JoAnn "Susie" DeGray, both of St. Martinville; three sons, Aaron 'A.J.' Flegeance, of St. Martinville, and Jason 'Boozie' Flegeance, Sr., of New Iberia, and Calden (Marion) Francis, of St. Martinville; two sisters, Bernice Bernard, of Lafayette, and Myrtle Ned, of St. Martinville; 24 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, and 34 great-great grandchildren. The family requested that visiting hours be observed from 4:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Friday and continue on Saturday at 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday. My beautiful Aunt DEEDEE was such an important part of my growing up years. I thank Almighty God for putting her in my life. She taught me so much about how things should and should not be done. Even after becoming an adult, she was always giving me helpful hints about how to do different household chores. She was a bright light in my life. Again, thank you Almighty God for having her in my life.

I know you are in a better place and even though I've had you in my life for 35 years, I'm so jealous of everyone that is sharing your space now. I thought I was prepared for when this day would come...boy I was wrong. I never imagined it would feel like this. I know you will be watching over us. I love you, I miss you, and I hope to see you again. Kish

When I was a little girl, I used to have to stay with you while mom went to work. I used to go outside but I would get mad when you wouldn't let me get off the front porch. Now I know you were only trying to protect me from harm. As you look down upon me, please continue to protect me. You will be greatly missed down here. My heart fills with love everytime I think of you and all our memories together. Try not to fatten everyone up with all your home cooked meals, especially my favorite okra, fried chicken and potato salad and Nanny's punch. I love you Maw-Maw forever and always. Give my Aunt Dianne (Nanny) a big hug and a kiss for me.Denise
