St. Martinville - We are sad to announce the notice of death of Al James Landry. He left this earth to enter the promised land of Our Father in heaven.
Al was born to Mr. Dieu Donne "D.D." Landry and Mrs. Ruth Champagne Landry on the 13th of February, 1947 in St. Martinville, Louisiana. Al is the first of two children that Mr. D.D. and Mrs. Ruth had during their marriage.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna Bienvenu Landry; and his sister, Johnnie Landry Goldberg.
Al was an outdoors person, enjoying bike rides, hunting, fishing, drawing, and water skiing in his adolescent years. As a teenager he excelled at playing football for Saint Martinville Senior High.
Al attended Saint Martinville Primary, Elementary and Junior High and went on to complete his education at Saint Martinville Senior High.
Al attended USL between the years of 1966 thru 1971, majoring in Architecture.
He married Edna Marie Bienvenu on January 23, 1970. Together they gave birth to four children; Jeffrey Martin who married Sharon Leblanc and gave birth to Jeffrey Thomas; Becki Lynn who gave birth to four children: Madison Ivy, Hannah Abuvala, Gabrielle Mills and Ivey Alford; Benjamin Layne who married Jennifer Champagne who gave birth to Elijah Layne and Alexys Ann; and Al Nicholas who resides in California. Al and Edna’s love for children grew further with the rearing of three nieces, Andrea Landry, Erinn Sonnier York, and Amber Sonnier, as well as the children of one of his nieces, Mahjie Hebert, Israel “Brother” Hebert, and Lauren Hebert Thibodeaux, for an extended period, all of which they considered as their own. In addition to their children and grandchildren, he is survived by 9 great grandchildren; Asher and Emmery Douet, Brinley and Charlee Thibodeaux, Winter and Maddox Hebert, Marcelle and Soren Ivy, and Gray Abuvala.
He spent his career as an architect of public spaces. During his career, he is responsible for the design of Saint Martinville Senior High, Saint Martinville Law Enforcement Center, Saint Martinville Library, Saint Martinville Police Jury Annex Building, and Uncle Dick Davis Campground, and many others.
Al was active in his church and faith. With Edna, he helped develop a prayer group at St. Elizabeth's in Coteau Holmes. Together, they initiated and led several Come Lord Jesus Bible Studies over the course of his lifetime. He will be missed by all, especially his family.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Pellerin Funeral Home, 112 New Market Street, St. Martinville, LA 70582 from 8:00 am until 2:30 pm on Friday, August 1, 2025.
A Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed at 11:00 am followed by a recitation of the Rosary at 1:00 pm on Friday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 pm on Friday, August 1st, 2025, at Saint Martin de Tours Catholic Church, 133 South Main Street, St. Martinville, LA 70582.
Rev. Bill Melancon will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Concelebrants will be Fr. Vidrine, Fr. Gabrielle, Fr. Brent, and Deacon Conques.
Altar Servers will be Andre Verrett, and Thomas, John, and Joseph Conques. Gift Bearers will be Poochie Denaise, Therese Bennette, and Brielle Bennette.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Landry, Benjamin Landry, Nicholas Landry, Brayden Romero, Elijah Landry, and JT Landry.
Entombment will follow at Saint Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Saint Teresa Center for the Works of Mercy which his wife, Edna Landry helped to found along with the Community for Jesus Crucified - the Saint Teresa Center, 103 Railroad Ave, Saint Martinville, LA 70582.
