St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville, for Alexis Joseph 'A.J.' Laviolette, Jr., 78, who passed away on Monday, May 2, 2011 at St. Martinville Rehab & Nursing Center. Fr. Ed Degeyter will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Scriptures will be read by Connie Lasseigne and Mitzi Broussard. Gift Bearers will be Lisa Hulin and Shane Dugas. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville. A.J. was a native of St. Martinville, but spent most of his life in the New Orleans area. He moved back to this area after Hurricane Katrina, where he spent his remaining years. In his free time he enjoyed off-track horse racing and loved spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include four sisters, Jessie Patin and her husband, Thomas, of St. Martinville, Inez Vincent, Annette Dugas, and Beulah Dugas, all of Loreauville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexis and Anne Albert Laviolette, Sr.; two sisters, Mabel Gondron and Yola Carter; and four brothers, Junius, Chester, Francis, and Malcolm Laviolette. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Charles Carter, H.L. Carter, Randy Carter, Gary Carter, Ricky Laviolette, and Chester Laviolette, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Patin, Raymond Laviolette, Malcolm Dugas, Kenneth Dugas, and Chris Laviolette. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of St. Martinville Rehab & Nursing Center, along with Hospice of Acadiana, for their compassion and excellent care they provided him.
