Alfred Sr. Zeringue

Breaux Bridge - Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Pellerin Funeral Home Chapel in Breaux Bridge, for Alfred Zeringue, Sr., 91, who died at his home on Wednesday, June 25th at 11:58 pm. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday. A rosary will be recited at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Deacon Marcel "Butch" Hebert will officiate at the Funeral Service. Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery No. 2 in Breaux Bridge. Mr. Zeringue was a World War II veteran serving in England, North Africa, France and Italy. He was an MP who provided guard service for Pope Pius XII where at that time he had a private audience with the Pope. He helped organize the first Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops in Breaux Bridge where he was a leader for 13 years. He was also a leader for Explorers, supervisor of Boy Scout Eagle projects, Unit Commissioner for 4 years and was on the review board for Eagle Scouts. He was a founding father of Gary Memorial Hospital. He was an active member of the American Legion, Farm Bureau, Woodmen of the World, Cancer Society and St. Martin Parish Sheriffs SALT program. From 1980 to 2011 he was a member of the Acadiana Ostomy Association, where he was president for over 30 years. He provided medical supplies to indigent ostomy patients and expertise to patients, nurses, and all medical staff. He was on the board and a staff member of Camp Bluebird where he made over 2,000 bluebird kits for cancer survivors. He was an active volunteer at Our Lady of Lourdes for 15 years. He volunteered at St. Bernard/St. Francis Service Center and helped distribute Food for Seniors. In 1997, he was awarded The Bishops Volunteer Award. In the past, Zeringue served as president of the Lions Club and a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, Breaux Bridge Band Boosters and Breaux Bridge Athletic Boosters Club. He was a foster parent for 4 children. Mr. Zeringue worked in the construction industry for 5 years building smoke stacks and then 20 years building commercial and residential homes in the area with Zeringue and LeBlanc Construction and employed several local youths in the area who were working their way through college. In 1964, he took over the Conoco station for 20 years. Survivors include Alfred Zeringue, Jr. and wife, Helen, Jacquelyn Stoddart and husband, John, Michael Zeringue and wife, Charlene, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Anna Louise Melancon Zeringue, parents, Albert and Editha Guidry Zeringue, 2 sisters, Eula Mae Tauzin and Mary Lee Winstead, and granddaughter, Jamie Louise Stoddart.
