St. Martinville – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, February 12, 2021 at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville for Babette Bienvenu Dugas, 69, who passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at the funeral home from 8:30 am until 10:45 am on Friday. A rosary will be prayed at 10:00 am on Friday. Fr. Ed Degeyter will officiate at the Funeral Mass. The readers will be Jeanise Bernard, Geralyn Bourque, and Hayden Dugas. Interment will follow at St. Michael Mausoleum in St. Martinville. After a heroic battle with kidney failure, Babette Bienvenu Dugas passed away in her home surrounded by her loved ones in Parks, Louisiana. She was 69 years old. She was born December 19, 1951. At the age of two, she spent one entire year in St. Martin Infirmary battling against kidney failure. She fought for her life then and bravely for the rest of her life. Those who knew her can attest how truly deep her strength and will to live was. Babette battled stroke, cardiac disease, cancer, broken bones, diabetes, and ultimately kidney failure. Babette is survived by her children, Emily Rosenzweig and her husband, Michael of Seattle, WA, and Eric Paul Dugas of Houston, TX; two grandchildren: Hayden Dugas and Henry Dugas of Houston, TX. She is also survived by her sisters, Teetsie (Jimmy) Champagne, of Beaumont, TX, Marcia (Jerry) Delhomme, of Breaux Bridge, Bekki Lockhart, of Baton Rouge, Geralyn (Chummy) Bourque, of Lafayette, Mary Margaret (Doug) Saloom, of Lafayette and Celeste (Rodney) Ransonet of Youngsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Marcelle Bienvenu; one brother-in-law, Micheal Lockhart; and one niece, Stephanie Champagne Herbsleb. She touched many students’ lives during her 37-year career as a teacher. She taught at Mercy High School and St. Martinville Primary. Babette was an athlete and enjoyed all sports. Babette enjoyed summer softball leagues with her Signorelli’s group, “A League of Their Own”, before starting a family. She was an avid horse rider and enjoyed barrel racing. Babette was famous for adopting stray pets. She enjoyed casino night and slot machines and would often win the yearly Basketball Final Four predictions. She would commonly coach her children’s baseball leagues during the summer. Babette belonged to LAPHERD - Louisiana Association of Physical Health Education Recreation and Dance. Later in her life she became a billiards aficionado and traveled to Vegas to compete. The family would like to thank her best friends and neighbors who continually checked on her, ran errands, and cooked for her. The family also sends love to her caregivers Vanessa Landry and Paula Monroe. Her end-of-life care came from the most compassionate, professional team of Palliative Care of Acadiana and Hospice of Acadiana - Amy, Alyson, Charlotte, “T”, and Steve. Pallbearers will be Chummy Bourque, Jimmy Champagne, Jerry Delhomme, Jeff Delhomme, Jake Delhomme, and Michael Lockhart. Honorary pallbearers will be Hayden Dugas, Henry Dugas, Rodney Ransonet, and Doug Saloom.
