Bernice Melancon Leath
Breaux Bridge - A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:00 pm, on Friday, January 31, 2014, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, for Bernice Melancon Leath , 91, who passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Amelia Manor Nursing Home.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Pellerin Funeral Home in Breaux Bridge from 3:30 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday and continue at 7:00 am until 12:30 pm on Friday.
A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Thursday.
Father Donald Pelous will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Reading the scriptures for the service will be Judy Devillier Olivier. Serving as gift bearers will be Jane Stelly, Iva Devillier and Thomas O. Guidry.
Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery No. 2 in Breaux Bridge.
Mrs. Leath was born in Lafayette on June 15, 1922 and grew up in Breaux Bridge. She attended the Louisiana School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge and then began working in Pascagoula, MS where she met her future husband, Bedford Leath. They were married on July 22, 1943. They later moved to Aurora, IL. In 1973 they moved to Breaux Bridge.
She enjoyed being outdoors growing flowers. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting and sewing. She cherished times that she spent with her family and friends.
Mrs. Leath is survived by her nieces and nephews, Iva (Hayward) Devillier, Thomas O. (Gayle) Guidry, Jane (Alton) Stelly, Rosa Guidry, Michael Guidry, Mildred (Ray) Foray, her step sister, Hazel (Wilbert) Johnston, and her step brother, Clovis LeBlanc.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bedford Leath, her parents, Alfred "Freddie" and Celanie Melancon, her sister, Marie Alzire (Ovey) Guidry, her half brother, John Allen Melancon, and step sister, Isabelle (Holden) LeBlanc.
Pallbearers will be Michael Guidry, Shannon Guidry, Tony Stelly, Damien Guidry, Roger Guidry, and Germain Verdin.
Pellerin Funeral Home of Breaux Bridge, 211 Berard St., (337-332-2111) is in charge of arrangements.
