New Iberia – A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 12 Noon until 3:00 pm, at Pellerin Funeral Home, for Captain Jonathan Dunbar, 45, who passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026, has a result of a motorcycle accident.
Interment will be at a later date.
A native of Opelousas, Jonathan was born on September 19, 1981. He was a dedicated firefighter of nearly 16 years, starting his career with the Opelousas Fire Department for two years, and then transferred to the Iberia Parish Fire District #1, where he worked for 14 years, sharing his life with his brothers and sisters of both departments. Jonathan loved traveling, hiking, riding his motorcycle, and visiting his favorite place, the desert. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father to his four children. Jonathan was very supportive and selfless towards his family, friends, and communities.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Dunbar; father, David Lawrence Dunbar; mother, Sherry Smith Dunbar; children, Lola, Lennox, Linus, and Luciana; mother-in-law, Cheryl Wyatt Miller (Patrick); and step mother-in-law, Suzanne Mitchell Gregory.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Rodney Gregory; and his grandparents, Joyce Young Smith, Lloyd “Smitty” Smith, John Alonzo Dunbar, and Anna Lee Oretgo Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
