Charles Ray George was born on November 18, 1947, in St. Martinville, Louisiana, the son of Ida George and Freddie Washington. Charles was lovingly raised by his grandparents, Nicholas George and Anita Parker George, and by Samson Savoy - who married his mother, Ida - all of whom helped shape the man he would become, surrounding him with a large and devoted family of brothers and sisters who remained close to his heart throughout his life. A proud son of St. Martinville, Charles answered the call to serve his country in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably in Thailand, Guam, and Okinawa, leading as an officer during the Vietnam era. He was known especially for his work on B-52 jets. His service was recognized with an Honorable Discharge.
After returning home from Vietnam, Charles continued his education with coursework at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and built a distinguished career at Petroleum Helicopters International (PHI), where his skill and dedication as an airplane mechanic served the company for over a decade. He made his home in St. Martinville, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Charles found joy in the simple, steady pleasures of life. He loved fishing, painting, his work as an airplane mechanic, and watching the History Channel for hours on end. A devoted fan, he cheered on the New Orleans Saints through every season. And no one knew his favorite foods better than his family: lemon donuts, fried fish, and a good plate of spaghetti.
Above all, Charles took pride in his family. He passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy carried forward by his children, Nicholas (and his wife, Chastity) and Chantelle; his grandchildren, Ava Grace, Lena, and Brock; and the many family members and friends whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his children, Nicholas George (and his wife, Chastity George) and Chantelle George, Ph.D.; grandchildren, Ava Grace George, Lena George, and Brock George (children of Nicholas and Chastity George); and his siblings, Mary Joyce George; Monitta (Alvin) Jones; Zelma Ann (Leroy Banks) Savoy; Mary Camille Savoy; Wilson (Willamae) Savoy; Jasper Savoy; and Jimmie Washington.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Ida George Savoy, and his father, Freddie Washington; his grandparents, who raised him, Nicholas George and Anita Parker George; Samson Savoy, who married his mother, Ida, and helped raise him; his brothers, Willie Allen Savoy, Whitney Savoy, Sr., Charlie Savoy, Sr., Frederick Savoy, and Samuel Savoy; and his former wife, Debra Key George.
