Charles Wendell Hebert was born in Milton, Louisiana on February 21, 1939, to the late John and Aline Hebert.
Charles began his career serving as a security guard for the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, a role through which he faithfully committed himself to the safety and well-being of his community. His work path later led him to positions with Pullen Plant and Southern Structures, where, with a deep sense of pride, he worked alongside his two sons. Ultimately, Charles retired as a plant worker with McIlhenny Corp., the renowned home of Tabasco on Avery Island—where his hard work and dedication were reflected throughout the years.
Charles treasured simple joys that filled his days with meaning. He delighted in tending his vegetable garden and maintaining his yard, finding peace and satisfaction in nurturing his surroundings. Among his favorite pastimes was playing cards, especially the game of Bourree’, where he was known for skillfully “putting his opponents in poverty,” a playful skill that brought many moments of laughter and camaraderie.
Faith was the cornerstone of Charles’ life. As a devout Catholic and longtime member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Coteau, Charles’ spiritual commitments shaped much of his journey. It was here that he and his beloved wife, Lucy, were married sixty-six years ago—a union filled with love and mutual devotion that was a beacon to all who witnessed it. Charles served his church community as a Eucharistic minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5111. He also actively participated in Coteau Family Night, a reflection of his desire to nurture and support family connections within the parish. Charles was so thankful for the many priests who, over six decades, had shepherded his family’s spiritual life. Their guidance and care were among the blessings he counted most, framing a lifetime enriched by faith and community.
His family stood at the very heart of Charles’ life. Above all else, he cherished the time spent with loved ones. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed.
Mr. Hebert is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lucy Romero Hebert; sons, Barrett Hebert (Crystal) and Corey Hebert (Mary Ann); grandchildren, Seth Hebert (Niki), Tori Hebert, Hailey Hebert and Holly Hebert; and great-grandsons, Brody Hebert, Landon Hebert, and Rone Clements; and another great-grandchild due to arrive in October.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Roland Hebert, Warren Hebert, and Margie Champagne.
Pallbearers are Corey Hebert, Barrett Hebert, Seth Hebert, Rory Romero, Marty Menard, and Tunie Reaux.
Charles leaves behind a world more colorful than he found it. He will remain in our hearts forever. May he rest in peace.
