New Iberia – Memorial services will be at 10:00 am, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the First Methodist Church, 119 Jefferson Street, in New Iberia, for Don Rutherford, 81, who passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord in the early morning hours on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:00 am on Saturday, at the First Methodist Church.
Mr. Rutherford was born in Chandler, Oklahoma on December 14, 1943, to the late Jack and Jessie Rutherford. In 1955, he moved to New Iberia, where he would spend the remainder of his life.
A 1962 graduate of New Iberia High School, Don's roots in this town ran deep. It was here that he fell in love with Brenda DeBuse, his high school sweetheart. Together they embarked on an incredible journey of nearly 62 years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and mutual support, until her passing last year.
Don was well-known in the community, particularly as the golf pro who owned and operated Brendon Country Club for many years. Through his passion for the sport, he created countless memories for families and friends who took to the greens. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to operate Pro Beepers, further establishing his presence in the local economy.
In retirement, Don and Brenda dedicated their time to serving on the board of Rosehill Cemetery, where they were instrumental in organizing the cemetery records.
Mr. Rutherford is survived by a brother, Kenny Rutherford (Frances) of Woodstock, Georgia; and a sister, Candy Rutherford Warren (Mel Cowan) of Senatobia, Mississippi. Don and Bren shared nieces and nephews and other extended family who loved and cared for them. Jimmy Verret and Scarlett were also considered family. In his last years, Don was cared for by his niece, Cheryl Dohmann and her husband Richard, along with their family.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Brenda, Don was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Rutherford and Mike Rutherford.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations for Don and Bren’s beloved fur babies, who were like their “girls,” Hollie and Ellie.
Don will be remembered for his kind spirit and gentle heart. May he rest in peace.
