Dorothy May Bernard

August 8, 1916 — June 2, 2014

Breaux Bridge Dot was born on August 8, 1916 in Lafourche, Louisiana and passed away on Monday, June 2, 2014, at St. Agnes Nursing Home in Breaux Bridge. Dot was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas L. Bernard and Edna Champagne Bernard. Also by her sister, Elaine B. St. Germain and brother, Lowell T. (Sonny) Bernard, as well as by one niece and two nephews. She is survived by her brother, James D. (Nookie) Bernard of Breaux Bridge and her sister, Marjorie (Connie) Domingue of Lafayette. She is also survived by 8 nephews, 7 nieces, and 16 great nephews and 9 great nieces and many great-great nephews and nieces. Dot began teaching in a one room school in Arnaudville, LA. She retired with over 40 years of teaching many students. She then began working as a librarian at a private school and then the public library in Breaux Bridge, where she retired again at age, 83. She also taught school in Japan and Germany. Dot loved traveling to different countries. She was an avid reader and read until her eyesight recently failed. She was a lover of cats and adopted the many who came to her door. Dot was a 60 year member of the Catholic Daughters, a member of the Kappa Kappa Iota Lambda Conclave, the Retired Teachers Association, and a faithful participant at the St. Bernard Perpetual Adoration Chapel. She will be greatly missed by the students, friends, and relatives whose lives she touched so lovingly. Dot left these words of wisdom to share with those still here on earth: Please dont talk about me when Im gone even though I carry on. If you cant say anything real nice, take my advice and dont say anything at all. In parting, you go your way, Ill go mine. Its best that we do. Heres a kiss; I hope it brings lots of luck to you. As per her wishes, her body was donated to science. A gathering of family will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Breaux Bridge Public Library.
