Breaux Bridge - A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at Pellerin Funeral Home in Breaux Bridge to celebrate the life of Elwood James Courvelle "Smiley", 79, who passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
The family requests visitation be held at the funeral home in Breaux Bridge on Monday, June 30, 2025 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. It will continue on Tuesday from 8:00 am until the time of service.
A Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 pm on Monday evening.
Deacon Marcel "Butch" Hebert will officiate at the Funeral Service. Burial will follow at St. John Berchman Cemetery in Cankton.
Elwood was a dedicated and passionate entrepreneur, owning several local businesses in Breaux Bridge and Lafayette, including Computer World, a grocery store, and later, Showtime Home Video. His exceptional salesmanship and incredible people skills made him a revered figure in the community. Whether selling cookies or campers in his later years, he never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone.
A true champion of youth, Smiley devoted time to coaching young athletes in football and t-ball. He was a guiding light in their lives, instilling values of teamwork and perseverance. Beyond sports, he cherished his family, he was a loving "Grumpy" to his grandchildren, Nathan and Lila Mouton. He found immense joy in supporting them in their various pursuits, whether in sports or the performing arts.
His passions extended into his personal life, where he found joy in gardening, tending to his yard, and listening to Cajun and French music. An avid reader, Elwood was always eager to have a book in his hand.
A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Elwood will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hilda H. Courvelle; son, Keith Courvelle; daughters, Dawn Courvelle (Ben) and Ginger Mouton (Mitchell); grandchildren, Nathan Mouton and Lila Mouton; brothers, Leland Courvelle (Shirley) and Malcolm Courvelle (Tami); sister, Bonnie Domingue; and brother-in-law, John Bernard, Jr.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Courvelle and Belzie Menard Courvelle; sister, Janell Bernard; brother, Emery Courvelle and his wife, Aline; and brother-in-law, Elmo Domingue.
Pallbearers will be Keith Courvelle, John Bernard, Jr., Malcolm Courvelle, Mitchell Mouton, Ben Callender and Nathan Mouton.
Honorary Pallbearer will be Leland Courvelle.
Pellerin Funeral Home (337-332-2111) is in charge of arrangements.
