New Iberia – Memorial services will be held at 6:00 pm, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Rip Van Winkle Gardens, for Glenn M. Stokes, 87, who passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026. Please wear bold tropical attire.

Mr. Stokes was a long-time resident of New Iberia, and was born on June 28, 1938, in Houston, Texas, to the late Maurice and Hazel Henderson Stokes. Both of his parents were active in the nursery industry. Before he was eight years old, Mr. Stokes had lived in Washington, D.C., Seattle, WA, and Forest Hill, LA. He worked at his Uncle’s nursery in Lafayette. It was there that he learned to speak French.

Mr. Stokes attended S.L.I., now the University of Louisiana Lafayette, on a football scholarship, majoring in biology and chemistry. During his sophomore year, he met his wife, Yvonne Cheramie Stokes. He received a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska in Entomology and Chemistry. Then, Mr. Stokes received a scholarship and fellowship to teach at Harvard University, in Massachusetts. There he received his second master’s degree in Evolutionary Biology.

After receiving his second master’s degree in Evolutionary Biology. from Harvard, the family then moved to Gainesville, Florida. Mr. Stokes then studied at the University of Florida. He also worked as a photographer and outdoor editor for The Gainesville Sun Newspaper.

Upon returning to Louisiana, Mr. Stokes was the director of the mosquito control program for Jefferson Parish, for 17 years. He was also a consultant for the World Health Organization, and attended conferences in Geneva, Switzerland. His work also involved going to Central America and Africa.

Mr. Stokes was contracted, for five years, by Walt Disney to help plan a future park’s pest and mosquito control program. He also performed mosquito control for President Richard M. Nixon at his home on Walker’s Cay, in the Northern Bahamas.

Mr. Stokes was the owner of Mosquito Control Contractors, Inc. (MCCI), Stokes Haitian Art and Stokes Tropicals. He would often give lectures about tropical plants. Mr. Stokes was also an author and photographer. He was an art collector and a world traveler, having traveled to seven continents. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Yvonne Cheramie Stokes of New Iberia; children, Sondra Stokes of Lafayette, Glenn Stokes, II of Lafayette and Leif Stokes (Jayne) of New Iberia; grandchildren, Catherine Hartweck (Jason), Caroline Matkin (Benjamin), Christina Eachus (Shane), Sammy Stokes, Ashton Stokes (Peyton), and Glenn Stokes, III; and a brother, Virgil Stokes.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Stokes was preceded in death by a grandson, Julien Stokes and a granddaughter, Marion Stokes.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ashton Stokes, Glenn Stokes, III, Sammy Stokes, Jason Hartweck, Benjamin Matkin and Shane Eachus.
