Jerry Alan Oubre was born in New Iberia on April 15, 1942. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sherdell “Dell” Dye Oubre of New Iberia; children, David Oubre (Lindy) of Cypress, Texas, Michelle Oubre Gallagher (Matt) of Madisonville, Stephen Oubre (Shea) of Mandeville, and Melissa Oubre Sharpe of New Iberia; grandchildren, Matthew Gallagher, Zachary Gallagher, Noah Sharpe, Evan Oubre, Emily Oubre, Molly Oubre, Rachel Oubre, Jordan Johnson, and Josh Johnson; siblings, John Oubre (significant other, Sandra Reed), Mary Beth Oubre (significant other, David Hixson), Timothy Oubre, and Lisa Livingston (Ty); and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sandy Joseph Oubre and Edith Gibbons Oubre, and by his sister-in-law, Bonnie Edler Oubre.
Jerry grew up in Loreauville, where his father, Sandy Oubre, taught vocational agriculture at Loreauville High School. Having his own father as a teacher left a lasting impression on him — teaching him the value of hard work, humility, and doing things the right way. Sandy’s dedication and quiet integrity were qualities Jerry carried with him throughout his own life and career. His mother, Edith Gibbons Oubre, brought warmth, intelligence, and a love of learning to their home. She encouraged curiosity, kindness, and perseverance — qualities that shaped Jerry’s outlook and guided how he lived and led. The strength, faith, and compassion he learned from his parents became the foundation of the life he built with his own family.
Jerry was a proud graduate of Loreauville High School, Class of 1960. It was during these years that he met the love of his life, Dell, in New Iberia City Park in 1959. The two became high school sweethearts, and their bond only grew stronger through the years. They married on June 11, 1966, beginning a partnership that would span nearly six decades — one built on mutual love, laughter, and devotion.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which was known at the time as the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL). He later graduated from Louisiana State University Law Center in January 1967. During law school, he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity and was selected to serve on the LSU Moot Court Board of Student Advisors.
After graduation, Jerry began a long and distinguished legal career as a partner in the firm of Caffery, Oubre, Campbell & Garrison, L.L.P., with offices in New Iberia and Lafayette. Throughout his 50-year career, he was known for his integrity and professionalism. Many lawyers may have been his opponents in the courtroom, but they were always his friends outside of it.
He was an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the Iberia Parish Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, where he served on the Board of Directors. He also served as President of the Iberia Parish Bar Association and was a member of the American Inns of Court, Teche Chapter. He later trained in mediation at the Attorney-Mediators Institute in San Antonio, Texas. Beyond his professional life, Jerry gave generously of his time to his community. He was a longtime member and director of the New Iberia Jaycees, and he also served as a member of and chaired many committees of the New Iberia Optimist Club.
Jerry was the kind of man who led by example and inspired everyone around him. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. He showed what it meant to work hard, love deeply, and put family first. Whether coaching a team, visiting friends, or simply running errands around town, people were drawn to his humor, kindness, and respect.
He was proud of his family, and they were proud to be his. As a father and grandfather, he poured his heart into each of them — showing up for every moment that mattered and teaching by example what love and dedication look like. His legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren — in their laughter, their love for family, and the memories they share together.
Jerry also had a sharp and curious mind, with a remarkable depth of knowledge across countless subjects. Whether discussing history, current events, or science, he seemed to know a little about everything — and a lot about most things. His quick wit and love of learning made him an unbeatable trivia opponent and a favorite teammate during family games. He never stopped reading, questioning, or sharing what he knew, and his intellect was matched only by his humility.
He truly lived life to the fullest, doing the things he loved most. Some of his happiest moments were spent outdoors — fishing or duck hunting with family and friends, often sharing as many laughs as stories along the way. Whether it was a quiet morning on the water or a chilly sunrise in the marsh, he cherished those times together. At home, he found joy in simple pleasures — especially in the garden and around the grill. He took great pride in his garden, a passion he learned from his father and lovingly passed on to his sons. Many peaceful hours were spent among his tomatoes and cucumbers, where he found both purpose and calm. He also loved boiling crawfish and grilling for family and friends, bringing everyone together over good food and laughter. His loyal companion, Cooper, was never far from his side, bringing warmth and comfort to his days.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Vina S. Baker, Dr. Jon D. Leleux, and Dr. Moses M. Kitakule for their exceptional care. They would also like to thank Leslie Cormier for her compassionate care and unwavering support.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Gallagher, Zachary Gallagher, Noah Sharpe, Trenton Oubre, Tyler Oubre, and Jeremy Ackal. Honorary pallbearer will be Kristian Oubre.
