Jim Edd Kennedy, 82, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, friends, and caregivers. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and man of unwavering Christian faith, Jim lived a life defined by gratitude, kindness, resilience, and quiet strength.
Jim was born on July 13, 1943, in Lubbock, Texas, to Guy Kennedy and Katherine Howard Kennedy. He graduated from Monterey High School in Lubbock in 1961, where he proudly served as drum major of the marching band. He grew up attending Central Baptist Church, where he met his high school sweetheart, future wife, and mother to his three children, Elaine Redford. Their first date was to the rodeo when they were just young teenagers, wearing matching shirts lovingly made by Elaine's mother—a story that remained one of Jim's favorites throughout his life.
At the age of eleven, Jim began working at Piggy Wiggly, the company where his father spent his career, learning the value of hard work long before graduating from high school. He married Elaine on June 5, 1964, in Lubbock, and together they built a beautiful family centered on faith, love, and service to others.
After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) in 1965, Jim began what would become a distinguished career with DuPont. Starting in Victoria, Texas, he dedicated his entire professional life to the company, serving in numerous engineering and leadership roles over more than three decades. His career led his family to Victoria, Texas; Parkersburg, West Virginia; Wilmington, Delaware; back to Parkersburg; again to Victoria; Orange, Texas; and finally Kingwood, Texas, where he retired in 1998. Through hard work, integrity, and thoughtful leadership, Jim rose from process engineer to management positions within DuPont's corporate organization and served as superintendent at several manufacturing facilities.
No matter where life took them, Jim and Elaine embraced each new community with joy and optimism. Together they were active members of various Baptist churches, teaching Sunday school, singing in church choirs, and forming friendships that endured for decades. They loved playing tennis, hosting and attending bridge nights with friends, and lived by the philosophy of "bloom where you are planted." Their lives reflected deep Christian faith and a genuine love for people. Elaine passed away on April 25, 1996, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
In December 1997, Jim married Joy Calais, beginning another remarkable chapter filled with love, companionship, and adventure. During nearly twenty-eight years of marriage, Jim and Joy traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, making treasured memories and lifelong friendships. To solidify their shared faith, Jim joined the Catholic Church in 2001. They embraced each day together with gratitude and affection until Joy's passing on July 18, 2025, after her own courageous battle with cancer.
Although the last three decades of Jim’s life were marked by profound loss, as he endured the heartbreaking deaths of two beloved wives, he always held fast to hope over despair. Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006, he refused to let his illness define him. Instead, he continued to live with remarkable courage, grace, and steadfast faith. He remained deeply grateful for each day, finding joy in his family, friendships, and God's many blessings.
Even in his later years, Jim continued pursuing the hobbies that brought him happiness. He was an accomplished photographer and videographer who created meaningful videos documenting family travels, honoring loved ones, and encouraging others living with Parkinson's disease. He enjoyed gardening and found particular delight in birdwatching, one of his greatest lifelong passions. Music also remained close to his heart. He loved listening to and singing the great Baptist hymns, faithfully remembering every verse—even during his final days.
Jim's greatest legacy is not found in his professional accomplishments but in the example he set for everyone who knew him. He demonstrated that a life of faith can leave an enduring impact on generations. His gentle spirit, generous heart, and love for others will continue to inspire all whose lives he touched.
Jim is survived by his sister, Sharon Kennedy Deering Williford and her husband, Robert; his daughter, Karen Kennedy Day and her husband, Brad; his daughter, Lee Ann Kennedy Dover and her husband, David; his son, David Kennedy and his wife, Samantha; and his beloved grandchildren, Lesley Baker, Abby Florian, Lindsey Molina, Aidan Dover, Amelia Kennedy, and Annabelle Kennedy. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and countless others who were blessed by his friendship and example.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Katherine Kennedy; his beloved wife of nearly thirty-two years, Elaine Redford Kennedy; and his beloved wife of nearly twenty-eight years, Joy Calais Kennedy.
