A resident of New Iberia, John Winnfield “Winn” Murphey, Sr. was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on November 4, 1941, to the late Jack Smith Murphey and Corinne Broussard Murphey, and graduated from Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi. He attended Ole Miss, Spring Hill College, and graduated from USL, where he was a founding member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Winn was involved with Iberia Crimestoppers and was an active member of the Woodlands Homeowners Association.
Winn and his former wife Phyllis remained friends and attended many family events and holidays together. He was a devoted father and grandfather whose greatest concern was the happiness and well-being of his family. He was kind, had a very tender heart and knew the value of a hug. He had a great sense of humor, and was quick with a joke or witty comment, always making those around him feel comfortable and welcomed. He often spoke about his childhood and loved sharing family history with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed tennis, photography, and traveling, especially family vacations. Winn lived a happy and fulfilling life, and was most at peace when surrounded by family and friends that he loved. He had amazing friends, neighbors, tennis buddies, Thursday lunch group, and former co workers of whom he has told countless stories to his family over the years. He will be deeply missed.
Winn is survived by a son, John Murphey, Jr. (Kristen); daughters, Connie Weiss (Carl) and Kathy Escuriex (Jerome); grandchildren, Jackson Murphey, Claire Murphey, Courtney Haras (Grayson), Whitney Weiss, Jacob Escuriex, and Ashley Johnson (Hunter); and former wife, Phyllis Dupuis Murphey.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Winn will be remembered for his unique sense of humor that made him special to his friends and family. May he rest in peace.
The family would like to extend a big thank you to his doctors at Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette, the staff at Iberia General Hospital, Nursing Specialties Home Health and Hospice who were with us caring for Winn in his final days.
