John Jude Yunis, affectionately known as "JJ," was born on May 4, 1943, in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, where he has been a lifelong resident.
JJ was a distinguished student and graduated as salutatorian of the Class of 1961 from Breaux Bridge High School. He continued his education at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), earning a baccalaureate degree in Mathematics and a master's degree in education. A lifelong learner, he continued to pursue knowledge through numerous continuing education courses.
His professional career reflected his dedication to education and his diverse interests. He spent many years as a mathematics educator, teaching at the University of Louisiana, Breaux Bridge High School, and Crowley High School. He also served as principal of St. Martinville Elementary School. In addition to his work in education, JJ worked as a downhole directional reader in the oil industry for Teleco and as a bookkeeper for United States Steel.
Above all, JJ was a caring and devoted husband to his wife, Brenda, with whom he shared 30 years of marriage; and a loving and generous father to his daughter, Casae. A thoughtful listener, he was willing to offer suggestions and guidance to those who sought his counsel.
Outside of his professional life, JJ enjoyed an active life filled with travel, reading adventure and thriller novels, and outdoor pursuits. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and particularly enjoyed excursions with the Attakapas Hunting Club and the Toledo Bend Bass Fishing Club.
JJ will be remembered for his academic accomplishments, dedication to education, love of learning, generosity, keen insight, and devotion to his family.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Castille Hobbs Yunis and his daughter, Casae Hobbs Briggs, and her husband, Mitch Briggs; and many dear cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Yunis; his mother, Fabiola Guidry Yunis Trosclair; and his sister, Jackie Yunis, as well as Lester, LeeRoy, Eula Mae and Velma Trosclair.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Acadiana and his caregivers, Christy Davis and Denise Payne. Special thanks are also extended to his Oklahoma nieces, Madison Altom and Cleo Altom, for their love and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to Hospice of Acadiana for Food with Love Lafayette. Donations can be made online at https://hospiceacadiana.com/hoa/donate.
