Johnny David Serrette, a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, generosity, and craftsmanship.
Johnny was employed by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. He began his career as an offshore inspector, he ensured safety standards were met on oil rigs across the Gulf of Mexico. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence earned him the respect of colleagues and industry professionals alike. Johnny worked his way up the ranks, ending his 33-year career with the title of Supervisory Inspector of Well Operations.
Born in Cypress Island, Johnny was a man of many talents. Outside of work, he was a true outdoorsman who found peace and happiness in nature. He especially loved deer hunting and spending time at his camp, where he could immerse himself in the beauty of the outdoors.
Johnny had a knack for making people feel welcome, whether it was hanging out with his fellow bikers or a neighborhood boucherie or cookout with his family and friends.
His laughter was infectious, and his stories were often embellished with hilarious imitations and anecdotes. Whether it was processing his own deer sausage or cooking, Johnny's culinary skills were countless; his homemade chow-chow, deer sausage, gumbo and crawfish boiling skills were legendary among family and friends. His favorite was gumbo.
His skills as a chef were a testament to his love for cooking and his desire to share good food and good times with those he loved. Johnny's hands were never idle. His remarkable ability to fix anything made him the go-to person for friends and family in need of a helping hand. Johnny's skills extended to building; there was nothing he couldn't construct with his hands and a bit of ingenuity.
His passion for motorcycles saw him spend countless hours tinkering with engines, customizing bikes, and hitting the open road, he especially loved his trips through the USA. There were only 5 states he has not visited you. Whether it was a vintage Harley-Davidson or a sleek sportbike, Johnny's eyes would light up at the sight of two wheels. Another love of Johnny's was following the Alabama Crimson Tide Football Team. The games he could not attend in person, he was found glued to his big screen cheering "Roll Tide".
Johnny was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Sterling "Took" and Francis F. Serrette; his maternal grandparents, Elie and Irene B. Hulin; his In-Laws, Joseph and Marie Broussard; and his fur buddy, "Rex".
Johnny leaves behind his loving wife, Betty; son, Jeremy (Katie) Serrette; grandchildren, Berylnn, Breanna, Layke, Cale and Kilien; his parents, Clemes "CD" and Betty Serrette; his siblings, Lila Faye Serrette, Joey (Tammy) Serrette, Darnell (Troy) Boudreaux; and several nieces and nephews who will forever cherish the memories of his warmth, humor, and unwavering love. Johnny's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Johnny's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Lafayette General ICU and St. Joseph Carpenter House for their exceptional care and support during his final days. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort to Johnny and his family during a difficult time.
