Joseph Harold Smith

Rynella – Arrangements are pending for Joseph Harold Smith, 85, who passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, at his home.

Joseph Harold Smith was born in Arnaudville, Louisiana on March 8, 1940, to the late Henry and Mildred Wills Smith. He graduated from Arnaudville High School, and proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam Era.

Smitty’s early years were shaped on a farm where the land instilled in him a profound love for the outdoors. This connection with the earth accompanied him throughout his life, manifesting in his cherished hobbies of hunting, fishing, and gardening. Among his proudest accomplishments were his extraordinary tomatoes, which he carefully nurtured in his garden. With a deep sense of pride, he grew the most beautiful tomatoes and sold them to three local stores, sharing the fruits of his labor with the community.

His professional life began as a dedicated employee at Holsum Bread, followed by a tenure at the International Salt Mine on Avery Island, Louisiana. Joseph later retired as an operator from Carbo Ceramics at the airbase, where he was respected for his commitment and diligence.

Family played a central role in Joseph's life. He found joy in simple pleasures, whether it was gathering for crawfish boils, enjoying meals out, or simply spending time together. His warmth and kindness created bonds that will forever be cherished.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of nearly 61 (in August) years, Dianna Derouen Smith; daughters, Lisa Cook (Galand) and Tammy Bailey (Tony); a sister, Henrietta LaGrange (Ronald); sisters-in-law, Elsie and Elizabeth Smith; grandchildren, Brittany Claitor (Sam), Tony Bailey III, Sydney Bailey, and Colby Cook; and great-grandchildren, Carter Cook, Caroline Bailey, Bailey Claitor, Avalyn Cook, Otto Claitor, Finn Claitor, and Lilly Bailey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Lee Smith, Bobby Smith, Charles Smith, and Donald Smith; and granddaughter, Holly Bailey.

As we remember Smitty, we celebrate a life that truly embraced the richness of family, the joy of the outdoors, and the heartwarming simplicity of everyday moments. May he rest in peace.
