A lifelong area resident, Kirby was born on Weeks Island, on October 9, 1944, to the late Donald and Georgette Hebert. Kirby graduated from New Iberia High School in 1962 during which time he earned his Eagle Scout Award. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1962 until 1968 and earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal while serving in the Dominican Republic Area. He retired from Centerpoint Energy, after 40 years of service. Kirby was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 365 and the Disabled American Veterans Lafayette Chapter #2 and was also a member of the U.S.S. Nantahala AO-60 Reunion Group.
Kirby was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching baseball and football. A member of the Ancient Order of Creole Gourmets, Kirby loved cooking and won several awards throughout the years at many area contests.
Kirby loved traveling and never met a stranger. He would make friends any place that he went, striking up conversations with anyone.
His greatest joy was taking care of the love of his life, his wife of nearly 60 years, Gracie Hebert. He would consistently say that she was the BEST thing that happened to him and that she was the most important person in his life.
Survivors include his wife, Gracie Hebert of New Iberia; children, Amy H. Burleigh (Lawrence) of Gonzales, Jill H. Braniff (Darrell) of Benton, and Kirby Hebert, II (Monica) of Jeanerette; grandchildren, Victoria Burleigh West (Josh), Alexis Burleigh Boutwell, Blaize Hebert Lynch (Dusty), Makenna Braniff, Amber Bergeron Patout (Rivers “Roddy”), and Gage Bergeron (Maddi); great grandchildren, Patton, Porter, and Patterson Lynch, Caroline and Lainey Boutwell, Josephine and Juliette West, and Rivers “Reid” Patout; brother, Daniel Hebert (Maurine); mother-in-law, Agnes Hebert; sister-in-law, Sandra Lancon; brothers-in-law, Rory Hebert (Laurie), Lucien Hebert, Donald Derise, and Gerald Myers; several nieces and nephews.
