A native and resident of New Iberia, Larry August Escuriex was born on March 13, 1941, to the late Lionel August Sr. and Odette Petitfils Escuriex.

A 1959 graduate of New Iberia High School, Larry pursued higher learning at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), earning his undergraduate degree. He then bravely answered the call of duty by joining the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, serving his country as a sergeant with honor and steadfast resolve from 1964-1970. Upon completing his military service, Larry returned to USL to further his education, achieving a master’s degree in marine biology in 1973.

Larry devoted himself to marine biology for a spell. He worked as an inspector for the Louisiana Board of Health and conducted research at Gulf South Research Institute (GSRI) and Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, then ultimately worked as a house painter for the greater part of his career. With paintbrush in hand, he transformed houses into vibrant homes, and animals onto canvases. His talent as an artist was undeniable, with a particular gift for capturing the beauty of animals, a testament to his enduring love for wildlife.

Larry’s home was a sanctuary for every stray and wild creature who found their way to his yard. His compassion extended far beyond human circles, reflecting his gentle spirit and unwavering kindness. A devout Catholic, Larry attended Mass every single day without fail. Though he never had children of his own, Larry’s heart belonged to his nieces and nephews, whom he cherished deeply. Their laughter and stories brightened his days and enriched the bonds they shared.

A man of simple yet profound joys, Larry delighted in the warmth of Mexican food and had a special fondness for two-for-one margaritas—moments of lighthearted celebration that echoed his good humor and zest for life. To many, he was a beacon of creativity and kindness, leaving behind a legacy of love in every brush stroke and every act of care.

Larry is survived by a brother, Ray Escuriex; sister-in-law, Joyce Belaire; numerous nieces and nephews including Catherine E. Mestayer (Karl), Ray Escuriex, Jr., Adrienne E. Mestayer (Steve), Pierre Escuriex (Carolyn), Michelle Escuriex, David Escuriex (Jenny), Martha E. Girouard (Craig), Jeanne E. Cutrera (Destinn), Michael Escuriex (Alissa), Henri Escuriex, Julie E. Bush (Chuck), Rene Escuriex (Liz), Gervais Escuriex (Juanita), Nanette E. Harkless, Jerome Escuriex (Kathy), Marianne E. Lane (Clif), Monique E. Richardson (Craig), Nicolle E. Shield (Tom), Keith Domingue (Nikki), Doug Belaire (Michelle), Kym Leleux (Craig), and Kay McGuffie (Ricky).

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lionel August Escuriex, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Louise “Sue” Escuriex and Dorothy “Dot” Escuriex; step-mother, Rosalie Belaire Escuriex; step-brother, Louis Belaire; step-sister, Ella Dominigue; and the love of his life, Mona Menard.

Larry’s presence graced this world with artistry, compassion, and warmth, and he will remain in our hearts forever. May he rest in peace.
