Margie Reed Duncan

December 23, 1926 — June 23, 2014

Avery Island - Margie Reed Duncan, of Avery Island, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 23, 2014. She was born the third daughter of Charles Reily Reed and Noblee Wynam Reed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Helm Duncan, Sr., her parents, and her siblings: Miriam Reed Lallande of Atlanta, Georgia; Kathleen Reed Miller of Mendenhall, Mississippi; Allan Perry Reed of Pleasantville, New York, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Another brother, Jack, died at an early age in New Iberia, where the family resided throughout their younger years. Following in the footsteps of her older sisters, Margie received a registered nurses degree from the Mathes School of Nursing in New Orleans. She met her husband, Robert Duncan, on Avery Island, while in private practice for several of his relatives. They were married in New Iberia, where they raised their four children: Virginia Lee Duncan Moseley (married to Madison C. Moseley) of New Orleans and Avery Island; Katherine Avery Duncan (married to Stephen Baughman) of Pergossa Springs, Colorado; Robert Helm Duncan, Jr.; and Brooke Helm Duncan (married to Lucia Hebert) of Avery Island. She had five grandsons: Avery Duncan Moseley (married to Brittany Adams) of Newport Beach, California; John Craig Marsh Moseley of New Orleans; Brandon Avery Duncan (married to Sarah McCloskey) of New Orleans; Stuart Helm Duncan (married to Jana Whatley) of Lafayette, Louisiana; and Robert Helm Duncan III of Avery Island. She is also survived by one great-grandson, Fisher Helm Duncan, son of Stuart Duncan, and a host of nieces and nephews. Attending to others needs was a joy to Margie. During her nursing career she worked at Dauterive Hospital, and later became the administrator of Heritage Manor North, both located in New Iberia. She was extremely well liked and respected by her colleagues. Following a move to Houston, Texas, she continued her career and was responsible for bringing a large nursing home up to code by promoting her high standards. She and her husband attended The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, where they were active participants in the congregation. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of The St. Joseph Hospice and to the sitters who lovingly cared for their mother. A memorial service will be held in the Sacred Grove on Avery Island at 11:30 AM Saturday, June 28, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 303 West Main Street, New Iberia, Louisiana. Pellerin Funeral Home, 502 Jefferson Terrace Blvd, New Iberia, LA 70560, 337.365.3331 is in charge of the arrangements.
