Melvin James Guidry, 82, passed away quietly at his home on August 3, 2025.
Melvin was affectionately called "Pop" and "Poppa Doo" by his granddaughters. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, the love of his life and caregiver, Audrey Broussard Guidry of Parks; his daughter, Brenda Guidry (Dewey "Jimmy") Benoit; his son, Mark (Cyndi) Guidry; and his granddaughters: Morghan Guidry, Jadyn Guidry, Brittney Suire and Gabby Benoit; and niece, Lynette (Terry) Guidry Doucet.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, Adrien P Guidry and Blanche Dore Guidry; and brother, Lynn Charles Guidry.
Melvin's career was his hobby. He and his wife, Audrey, owned Guidry's Nursery and Greenhouse. They lived off the land. Every season something was cultivated whether it be fruits or vegetables. You name it, he grew it. Early spring was spent planting seeds and tilling the ground for the coming garden. And when summer came, so did the harvest of fig preserves, tomato sauce, and canned green beans, peas and corn. Late summer brought in muscadines. The fall brought harvests of satsumas and pecans, and his favorite, persimmons.
He was very active in the local agriculture community. He was president of the Louisiana Pecan Association. He had an expert ability on budding citrus and grafting pecan trees. Our LSU AgCenter and local AgCenter reached out many times for his expert knowledge. He also coauthored a book on Persimmons for Louisiana.
His career extended to Martin Mills, Bruce Foods, and Louisiana Sugar Cane Cooperative.
The family would like to extend special thanks to St. Joseph Hospice and his nurses, Jeannie and Angelle.
Hugs and thanks to all of you who prayed, called, visited, cut grass, brought food and helped us navigate this season for our family.
Melvin's love, generosity and faithfulness will be dearly missed.
A gathering to honor Melvin's life will be held at a later date.
Pellerin Funeral Home (337-332-2111) is in charge of arrangements.
