New Iberia – Private services were held for Merlin Joseph Bourque, 84, who passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024, at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice.

Merlin Joseph Bourque was born in Coteau, Louisiana on March 21, 1939, to the late Otis and Anita Thomas Bourque. With a heavy heart and fond memories, he was laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery, next to the love of his life, Nelwin.

Merlin was a devoted electrician and A/C man who truly loved his work. He possessed an innate talent for understanding the complexities of these trades and dedicated himself to ensuring the comfort and safety of others.

But it was not just through his professional accomplishments that Merlin touched the lives of those around him. He was a pillar of faith and a true man of God who lived his life with unwavering devotion. His steadfast belief guided him through both joyous and challenging times, providing solace and inspiration to all who knew him.

As much as Merlin thrived in his profession and spirituality, nothing compared to the love he felt for his family. He cherished his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, forming unbreakable bonds that will forever endure. His devotion was evident in every hug given, every story shared, and every moment spent together. His family was truly blessed to have such a loving presence in their lives.

Mr. Bourque is survived by four children, Mernel Bourque, June Leleux (Glenn), Debra Romero (Harold), and Patrick Bourque; three grandchildren, Lynn Bourque (Rochelle), Kenneth Romero, and Brooke Romero (Jude); and great-grandchildren, Bailey Bourque (Hailey), Tobey Bourque, Corey Bourque,  Wesley Bourque, Braxton Romero, Titan Romero, and Audrey Romero.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nelwin Viator Bourque; and six siblings, Gervis Bourque, Albert Bourque, Melba Legnon, Verley Martin, Betty Fontenot, and Curtis Bourque.
