Nelwin Gary Word Vaughn

New Iberia - A Funeral Service will be held at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia for Nelwin Gary Word Vaughn, 92, who passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2022, in New Iberia.

Rev. Garrett Savoie will officiate.

Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in New Iberia.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Pellerin Funeral Home from 11:00 am until 2:30 pm on Tuesday.

A lifelong area resident, Nelwin Gary Word Vaughn was born on April 10, 1929 to the late Adam and Edora Comeaux Gary, and was a 1947 graduate of New Iberia High School. Her first job was at Pelican Creamery, and she retired as a saleslady from Beall's. She loved softball, bowling, cross-stitching, jigsaw puzzles, and reading. Mrs. Vaughn was an excellent cook, and was known for her gumbo and chocolate chip cookies. She cherished time spent with her family, and looked forward to hosting a big Christmas gathering every year. She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Loreauville; she loved the church fairs, and did a lot of baking for them. She also enjoyed going to the camp and fishing. A simple woman who enjoyed life and her family, Mrs. Newlin will be deeply missed.

Mrs. Nelwin is survived by her loving husband, Allen Vaughn of New Iberia; a daughter, Gail Hebert (Tim) of New Iberia; a son, Duke Word (Christine) of Lafayette; seven grandchildren, Keith Word (Tiffany), Eric Word (Bambi), Colin Word (Amy), Carmen Word, Camille Tullier (Rusty), Joshua Hebert (Meg), and Mindy Montet (Marcus); 12 great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Leonard Vaughn (Darlene), and William Vaughn; a stepdaughter, Debbie Ransonet (Hansel); five step-grandchildren, Heather Hidalgo (Scott), Heidi Rohrbach (Matthew), Lenny Vaughn (Heidi), Jamie Trahan (Corey), and Starla Moore (Dean); and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Hal Samuel Word; siblings, J.D. Gary, Wilbert Gary, Annie Mae Bergeron, and Thelma Bourque; and two step-grandchildren, Heath and Hailey Ransonet.

Pallbearers will be Keith Word, Eric Word, Colin Word, Joshua Hebert, Lenny Vaughn, and Lenard Vaughn.
