Born November 9, 1941, in Cecilia, Nita married young, and she and Alton "Tepoon" Champagne made their life in Parks. Kind, gentle, fun-loving, and smart, Nita worked as a bookkeeper, store owner, and insurance agent. However, her greatest love was family life on the small farm that she and her husband shared with their children. Teaching them values of hard work, simplicity of life, creativity, and care of others, Nita was the epitome of a good mother, generously sharing her love, time, and talent. To see or wear anything she sewed, one realized her true gift as a genius seamstress and fabric artist. Nita was also an amazing cook, with her specialties including homemade biscuits, smothered chicken, and crawfish etouffee.

A woman of deep faith, Nita was a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cecilia, then St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parks. She sang in the choir and served as both a Religion teacher and bookkeeper.

Nita had many roles in life, but none that she cherished more than wife, mother, and grandmother. Affectionately known as "Mawmaw" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she cared deeply for others and would have taken care of the world if she could have.

She is survived by her sons, Russ Champagne and Adam Champagne (Mel); daughters, Lucy Lissard (Chris), Sister Mavis Champagne, OLS and Helen Blanchard (Shawn); grandchildren, Emily Lancon (Zac), Marie Wartelle (John), Ross Champagne, Ben Lissard, Annie Champagne (Cindy), Joe Lissard (Taylor), Claire Schneider (Brody), Mary Granger (Mason) and Ava Blanchard; great-grandchildren, Lilah, Luke and Levi Lancon, Jones, Wesley and Cicily Wartelle and Eric Schneider; brothers, Patrick Huval and Leo "Pope" Huval (Judy); brother-in-law, Doc Champagne (Patsy); sisters-in-law, Betty Huval, Yvonne Huval and Lou Champagne; and her beloved and devoted canine companion, Honey.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alton Champagne; parents, Aldus "Bala" Huval and Mary Helen Guidry Huval; parents-in-law, Arista and Melanie Champagne; brothers, Fred Huval, George Huval (Lou), Bill Huval (Ethel) and Paul "Pyank" Huval; brother-in-law, Albert Champagne; sisters-in-law, Belle Huval and Louise Huval; and her godchild, Marc Champagne.

Pallbearers will be Adam Champagne, Russ Champagne, Ross Champagne, Ben Lissard, Joe Lissard, Zac Lancon, John Wartelle, Brody Schneider and Mason Granger.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Patrick Huval and Leo "Pope" Huval.

Thank you to the staff of Hospice of Acadiana and Calcutta House for their loving care in her time of need, most particularly to Treashur, McKenzie, and Laura. Thank you to the many caregivers who loved her along the way, especially Danielle, Elaine J, Elaine T, Vickie, and Barbara. Thank you also to Fr. Ed Degeyter and Fr.
