New Iberia – A memorial service will be held at 2pm at Church on the Rock on November 2, 2024, for Olan “Boy” Joseph Romero, 79, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
Pastor Ryan Derouen will officiate.
Olan Joseph Romero, a beloved member of his family and community, was born in Coteau, Louisiana on August 16, 1945, to the late Armance and Alida Viator Romero. Born with a heart full of love and a spirit of service, Olan dedicated his life to his faith, his family, and his community. His devotion to Christ was the cornerstone of his life, and he spent countless hours serving in the church, always eager to lend a hand and share the message of God’s love.
A devoted family man, Olan’s love for his wife, Barbara—whom he affectionately called “momma”—was unmatched. Their bond was a beautiful example of unwavering loyalty and devotion. His love extended deeply to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom felt the warmth of his guidance, encouragement, and support. Watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and thrive, particularly in sports, was one of his greatest joys.
Olan was also a proud member of the law enforcement community, having served as a sheriff’s deputy for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. His stories of those days were filled with fond memories, as were his tales of working as a horse trainer, shaping and mentoring others along the way. His dedication to his job reflected his love for service and his commitment to making a difference.
In his free time, Olan enjoyed spending time with his old buddies, reminiscing about the good old days and sharing in the laughter that accompanied their memories. He had a love for Louisiana football, never missing a chance to cheer for his beloved New Orleans Saints and LSU Tigers.
Whether with family or friends, Olan’s company was treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing leaves a profound sense of loss among his friends, family, and all those whose lives he touched. He will be remembered for his loyalty to Christ, his dedication to his family, and his love for the community that he served so faithfully.

“When I Must Leave You”
When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed wild tears, And hug your sorrow to you through the years, But start out bravely with a gallant smile; And for my sake and in my name, Live on and do all things the same, Feed not your loneliness on empty days, But fill each waking hour in useful ways; Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer, And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near; And never, never be afraid to die, For I am waiting for you in the sky!
