A lifelong resident of New Iberia, Jean was born on August 5, 1939, to George and Evelyn Delcambre. She devoted her life to her family and faith. She was the ultimate homemaker—never aspiring to be anything other than a loving wife and mother. Her home was a sanctuary, not only for her immediate family but also for friends and extended loved ones. She ensured that every day, no matter what grade her children were in, she was home before they arrived from school. Supper was always warm on the stove, and the family gathered around the dinner table each evening—a tradition that reflected her deep commitment to togetherness.
Jean shared 67 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Lionel J. Comb. Together, they built a life rooted in love and mutual devotion. Their shared passion for gardening made their yard a vibrant extension of their home—a place of beauty and peace that reflected Jean’s nurturing spirit.
Jean was a woman of deep faith who accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1984. For over four decades, she faithfully attended First Assembly of God Church in New Iberia—now Our Savior's Church—until physical limitations prevented her from going in person. Even then, she remained spiritually engaged by listening to sermons and scripture daily. She was a prayer warrior whose intercessions for her family were constant and heartfelt; her love for God's Word never waned. She wore many titles throughout her life: wife, mother, Granny, aunt, friend—but above all else, she cherished being known as a child of God. Though not perfect by her own admission, she strived always to grow in grace and love.
Jean is survived by her devoted husband, Lionel; their children, Todd Comb (wife Dusty), Janice Kohnke (husband Larry), Jodie Fortenberry (partner Jeff), and Amanda “Mandy” Comb; beloved son-in-law, James Fortenberry; grandchildren, Cody Comb (Autumn), Tyler Comb (Alexandria), Olivia Kohnke Chassion (Tony), Gabriel Kohnke, Joshua Fortenberry (Brittney), Jenni Fortenberry Hicks, and Megan Pope (Kenneth); and great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Evelyn, Wesley, Nathan, Kenzli, Tony Drake, Hannah Grace Lucille, Remmi, and Mia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Evelyn Delcambre; daughter, Patricia Lanell Comb; and granddaughter Hannah Lynel Kohnke.
Jean found joy in simple pleasures—she was an avid reader with an impressive personal library. She loved cooking for her family and took pride in creating meals that brought everyone together. Her garden flourished under the care she shared with Lionel—a testament to their teamwork and shared love for nature. Her legacy is one of unwavering faith, boundless love for family, and a life lived with purpose and devotion. The prayers she offered will echo for a thousand generations yet to come. May Jean Comb’s memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
