Our mother passed away on Monday, March 03, 2014 at her home in Parks surrounded by her family and dear
friends. After fighting breast cancer twice, heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure complications, she proved to beat the odds. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends and many supporters carried her though the years. Even through her struggles with declining health, she reached out to others in the community in many ways. Many came to her for advice and direction.
Known for her ease of frequent conversations with even total strangers, Shirley possessed a contagious smile and won the hearts of many. People who knew her were changed by her constant nurturing love. She always listened to people and had a real passion for serving her community.
She met her husband, Grover, 47 years ago and together they raised their children and helped to raise her sister's four children. Together they loved going to the camp on weekends, vacationing with the family, and cooking. With a real zest for life, she loved dancing, reading, playing cards, politics, casino and rides on the levee. The love they shared was amazing.
She enjoyed politics and many officials sought her advice and support. You could see her at many political functions brightening the room. Sometimes, she even seemed like the main attraction with more people surrounding her than the actual candidate. She wasn't a casual dresser, you could always see her with earrings, necklaces and rings to match her outfit.
As beautiful as a movie star, our mother, Shirley, enjoyed life to the fullest. She enjoyed holidays and birthdays. She loved family get-togethers and looked forward to our annual family/friend reunion bragging of 300 or more sharing the day with us. It was the simple things around her that she never took for granted.
A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I keep hearing a voice that says, "Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived while I was strong.
Continue my heritage, I'm counting on you.
Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest.
Remembering all, how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions, no matter how small.
Go on with your life, don't worry about falls.
I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes we're together again."
