St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am, on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in St. Martinville, for Sidney Mitchell, Jr. The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 7:00 am until 10:30 am on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Pellerin Funeral Home in St. Martinville. A rosary will be recited at 9:00 am on Saturday. Rev. Augustinus Seran SVD will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in St. Martinville. Sidney Mitchell, Jr., 95, beloved husband of the late Geneva Batiste Mitchell, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2014. Sidney was born May 20, 1918, to Sidney Mitchell and Violet Francis Mitchell on St. John Plantation. He was the second of six children. On April 27, 1940, Sidney was united in holy matrimony to Geneva Batiste and to this union five children were born. He was a strong, loving, devoted, and supportive person to his family. He showed kindness towards all he encountered. Sidney was a lifetime resident of St. Martinville. He began working for Levert St. John Inc. at a very young age. He worked as Shop Mechanic and Welder. He retired from Levert St. John at the age of 56. He was a parishioner of Notre Dame Catholic Church and a member of the Goodwill Mutual Aid Association Society. He loved working in his yard, taking care of his flowers and watching baseball. He leaves to cherish fond memories of his life, three daughters, Sidney Mae Sam, Geneva (Walter) Foote, and Margaret (Willie) Lewis; two sons, Gordon Mitchell and Norman (Serhania) Mitchell; five grandchildren, Vincent Sam, Melissa (Sterling) Francis, Melanie Neveu, Tiffieny Mitchell, and Valencia Mitchell; five great-grandchildren, Brittany (Colby) Babineaux, Jarett Neveu, Jodrick Allen, Koeshia Robertson and Aliyah Francis; one great-great-grandchild, Kaylei Brown; two sisters-in-law, Edith B. Francois and Doris B. Broussard; one brother-in-law, Delcambre (Geraldine) Batiste, Sr., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Sidney Mitchell, Sr.; his mother, Violet Francis Mitchell; his wife, Geneva Batiste Mitchell; his brothers, Bernard, Harold and Carroll Mitchell; his sisters, Leola Jones and Viola Hamilton; grandson, Jonathan Mitchell; daughter-in-law Dorothy Mitchell, son-in-law, James Sam, Sr., and twin infants. Sidney is the last member of his generation to go on to glory. Pallbearers will be Bernard Mitchell, Jr., Harold Mitchell Jr., John Carol Mitchell, Joe Jolivette, Keith Jacquet, and Louis Brown, III. Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Mitchell, Norman Mitchell, Willie Lewis,Walter Foote Jr., Vincent Sam, Sterling Francis Jr., Darrell Mitchell Sr., Donald Mitchell, Lester Mitchell, Raymond Mitchell, and Delcambre Batiste Sr. Pellerin Funeral Home of St. Martinville, 112 New Market St., is in charge of arrangements.
