New Iberia - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Walter “Pokey” Dugan, Jr. Who left us on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, surrounded by his ride or dies (family/friends). Born on May 21, 1970, Pokey was known for his spirited personality and his unwavering honesty. Pokey was a sassy mentor to those around him, full of wit and always wearing his heart on his shoulder. He was never one to shy away from sharing his opinion, and his lessons often centered around what not to do. Pokey’s brutal honesty became his trademark, always keeping it real for those who sought his guidance. His legacy will be remembered through his acts of kindness and commitment to helping others. Those close to him will forever cherish the memories and the valuable life lessons he shared. Pokey enjoyed listening to music, especially his favorite girl Mariah Carey. He loved playing Monopoly with his godchild Evan Delcambre. Pokey enjoyed watching American Idol, Young and the Restless, and Will and Grace.

A Celebration of Life for Pokey will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia. We invite all who knew and loved Pokey to join us in honoring his memory and the impact he had on the lives of many.

He is survived by his loving, mother, Paulette Poirier (Tommy); two brothers, Brandon Dugan, & Arron Dugan; sister, Holly Delcambre (Scott); Nieces, Brandy Owens (Raven), & Monica Romero (Nik); Stepsisters, Kim Maturin (Ben), & Jamie Maturin (Anthony); stepbrothers, Derick Poirier, & Taylor; His godchild whom he adored more then life itself, Evan R. Delcambre; Nephews, Ethan S. Delcambre “Sammi Jo”, Aaiken Q. Dugan, Collin C. Gondron, Jaxon J. Romero, and Ripp A. Owens; Nieces, Brittany Perez, Kylie R. Devillier, Davanee D. Dugan, Kamryn F. Gondron. He is also survived by his lifelong best friend, Rachelle Choate.

He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Dugan, Sr.; grandmother, Maria Belaire (Wilfred).

The family would like to thank the ICU staff at Iberia General Hospital for their kindness and compassion, especially his nurse Megan Lasalle for going above and beyond. Megan showed great compassion for Pokey and our family during such a trying time. The family would also like to thank everyone for all of the prayers.
